Dalla fine dell'apartheid quasi vent'anni fa, sempre più bianchi in Sudafrica si trovano a vivere in condizioni di povertà. Molti di loro vivono in township, alla periferia delle grandi città.

Una di queste si trova vicino a Johannesburg. Si chiama Coronation Park e ospita circa trecento persone, tra cui una settantina di bambini.

Anne Leroux è una pensionata che esprime malcontento per le politiche del governo guidato dall'African National Congress: "Mi dispiace che possa sembrare razzista - dice -, ma non lo sono, però i neri vengono prima, poi ci sono i bianchi. Anche bianchi altamente qualificati non ottengono una posizione in Sudafrica".

Sono molti i bianchi a puntare il dito contro l'African National Congress che, nel tentativo di riequilibrare decenni di discriminazioni razziali, ha introdotto una serie di leggi controverse: "L'apartheid era un problema - dice un uomo -. Ma questo è l'unico Paese al mondo dove la maggioranza beneficia di una discriminazione ppositiva. In America vi è discriminazione costruttiva, ognuno gode di discriminazione positiva, ma questo è l'unico Paese al mondo dove la maggioranza beneficia di una discriminazione positiva".

Caracas is a city with a population over three million, crammed into a valley in northern Venezuela. Over 2000-2010, Venezuela's oil revenues did not compensate for mismanagement of the city. The city's infrastructure deteriorated and Caracas residents are increasingly entrenched in slum areas. As of 2011, there was still no clear plan regarding how crime, poverty and severe traffic problems could be eradicated from the city.

The city of Caracas receives preferential treatment in Venezuela's economy, as Venezuela's oil-generated revenues are used to subsidise the city's development. Caracas' population growth is driven entirely by natural increase, as the city is too packed to accommodate further immigration. Housing in Caracas accounts for a relatively small share of the household budget but for damaging reasons. The majority of dwellings in the city are located in the slum areas, which are cheap.
