Rocket attacks have occurred in the Gaza Strip and Israel in a major new escalation. Video shows firefighters putting out fires after rockets hit parts of Israel.

On Saturday, dozens of rockets were fired from the blockaded Gaza Strip towards Israel, resulting in sirens blaring in Israel to warn of incoming fire. The military also reported terrorists infiltrating Israeli territory from Gaza. Additionally, AP reported that Hamas has declared the start of a new military operation against Israel.

Gun battles are continuing between Hamas fighters and Israeli forces in three main areas in southern Israel – at a kibbutz in Karmia and in the cities of Ashkelon and Sderot – with an Israeli army commander reportedly injured, according to Al Jazeera correspondents.

Israeli special forces were brought in to try to retake the sites held by Hamas, said Al Jazeera’s Mohammed Jamjoom, reporting from West Jerusalem.

El primer ministro israelí, Benjamin Netanyahu, prevé que la guerra será larga y "difícil" tras una noche de bombardeos sobre Gaza y combates entre el Ejército de Israel y los milicianos palestinos de Hamas que continúan. "Esta guerra llevará tiempo. Será difícil. Nos esperan días desafiantes. Sin embargo, puedo prometer una cosa: con la ayuda de Dios, las fuerzas que todos tenemos en común y nuestra fe, venceremos", ha expresado en un comunicado en el que seguirá adelante, "a pesar de un precio insoportable".

De momento son miles los reservistas que tras anunciar que no se unirían a filas por la polémica reforma judicial ahora tras el ataque de Hamás han dado marcha atrás y están acudiendo a filas. Mientras en Israel el estado de emergencia tiene a los ciudadanos sin salir de casa y la actividad de las ciudades parada en seco. Se calcula que son más de medio millar el número de víctimas entre palestinos e israelíes.

TERROR IN ISRAEL - FESTIVAL DES TODES: 260 Leichen auf Festivalgelände - Deutsche entführt.

Nach einem Angriff der militant-islamistischen Hamas auf ein Musikfestival in Israel haben Sanitäter des israelischen Rettungsdienstes Saka etwa 260 Leichen von dort geborgen. Das teilte Saka am Sonntag mit. Die Gesamtzahl der Opfer dürfte höher liegen, da auch andere Rettungsdienste im Einsatz waren.

Das Festivalgelände war eines von zahlreichen Zielen des Großangriffs der Hamas auf den Süden Israels, der am Samstag begonnen hat. Das Festival wurde von Tausenden Menschen besucht. In sozialen Medien und von Nachrichtenmedien veröffentlichte Videos zeigten Dutzende Festivalbesucher, die über eine freie Fläche rannten, während Schüsse zu hören waren. Viele versteckten sich in nahe gelegenen Obstplantagen oder wurden auf der Flucht niedergestreckt.

Die Hamas hatte Israel am Samstag mit einer beispiellosen Kombination von Großangriffen überrumpelt. Sie feuerte Tausende Raketen auf Israel ab, zugleich überwanden deren Kämpfer die stark gesicherte Grenze, drangen bis zu 24 Kilometer tief nach Israel ein, erschossen zahlreiche Menschen und entführten andere in den Gazastreifen. Israelischen Medienberichten zufolge wurden bei den Angriffen mindestens 700 Menschen in Israel getötet. Bei israelischen Gegenangriffen kamen im Gazastreifen mehr als 400 Menschen ums Leben.
