He also said that 370,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been wounded in the conflict with Russia, adding that half of these wounded troops were able to return to the battlefield.

On February 24th, Russia launched a military invasion of Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin called it a “special military operation,” but the scale of the attack shows this is a full-scale war that has already caused more than 100 casualties and forced more than half a million Ukrainians to flee their homes.

Ukraine and Russia’s conflict goes back to 2014, when Russia invaded and annexed Crimea and Russian-backed separatist forces took over parts of southeastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. Russia-Ukraine War: Trump Calls For An "Immediate Ceasefire" After Meeting Zelensky In Paris

Russia expressed openness to discussions on the Ukraine conflict following the US President-elect Donald Trump's call for "an immediate ceasefire and negotiations." He also said that Russia was in a weakened state because of Ukraine and its bad economy. Trump made his remarks a day after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris for their first in-person talks since Trump won the November election. Trump has committed to seeking a negotiated resolution to the conflict. The meeting came after French President Emmanuel Macron facilitated three-way talks with Zelensky and Trump at the Elysee Palace on Saturday. Zelensky emphasised the need for an "enduring peace" that would prevent Russia from undermining it in the future. Meanwhile, the Biden administration has announced a new security assistance package for Ukraine, whereas the incoming President Trump is planning to reduce aid for the country.

In the distance, we could hear the thud of outgoing Ukrainian artillery.

"I think there are some small arms too," said one of the tank crew we had come to see.

Getting here was a mission in itself – a six-hour drive from Kyiv to the border town of Sumy, then an overnight stay before rendezvousing with an army press officer escorting us in.
